A sweet picturesque town that has settled on the north-western coast of Istria was discovered by ancient Roman nobles. Today, it’s Croatia’s gateway to Europe. First built on a small island that was later connected to the land, this little town-port is now known as the Istrian sports centre as it attracts numerous top world tennis players. Try to imagine you are a Roman nobleman or noblewoman as you stroll Umag’s narrow streets and enjoy the ancient architecture. The beauty of this town will captivate not only your heart but also your imagination.

Historical sites

Venetian houses decorate the old Umag core. Parts of old town walls and forts have been preserved, as well as baroque and renaissance churches and buildings. Umag has several historical sites, some of them being the St Mary Church, and the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary and St Pelegrio. Those who enjoy art and would like to learn more about the town’s history and culture should visit the two galleries in Umag: Gallery Marin and Gallery Dante Marino Cettina.

Nine kilometres from Umag lies Savudrija, the westernmost point of Croatia. Best known for its lighthouse, which is the oldest active lighthouse on the Adriatic Sea, and also the first lighthouse in the world that used coal gas for lights. The story of the creation of the lighthouse is also the story of ill-fated love of the Austrian Count Metternich. While there, take a swim on the pebble beach just thirty metres from the lighthouse and enjoy the beauty of the Adriatic Sea.

Events

Many events take place in Umag every year, the most famous one of them being the ATP Croatia Open tennis tournament which attracts star players and tennis enthusiasts from all over the world. Those who like theatre will also like The International Festival of Chamber Theatre known as the Golden Lion. International Festival in Organs, also known as Organum Histriae Umag, and the International Organ’s Contest will interest those who enjoy classical music and especially organs. If you love literature, the International Literary Symposium is the perfect fit for you, and if you like science as well, make sure to pay a visit to The Literary and Science Meeting Forum Tomizza.

There are traditional local festivities with parties that last till the first sun rays of the next day, when the ancient streets come to life filled with youthful energy. Peaceful classical music concerts are held in the Parish Church and the Freedom Piazza. If you’re the type that enjoys big parties with DJ music, then the Sea Star Festival is just right for you.

Beaches

Many beautiful beaches decorate Umag’s coast, from sandy and rocky, to paved and pebbled beaches. Truly, there is a beach for every type of person. Osmica beach is just 2 km from the centre of Umag and is ideal for families with children. The sea is very shallow with an easy entrance, beautiful greenery that gives shade in hot summer days, and a kids’ pool with a fun pirate ship nearby. The sporty types will most certainly enjoy spending time on the Polynesia beach. It’s divided into pebble, paved, and rocky parts, and there are various sports amenities such as beach volleyball, the Umag Tennis Academy, a water sports centre, and a playground for children.

No matter your culinary taste, Umag has a lot to offer. While you’re there, savour numerous local delicacies and specialties such as prosciutto, cheese, pork loin, fritters, kroštule, and truffles. Don’t forget to try Mediterranean and local fish dishes. You can try all of these dishes and more in numerous restaurants and taverns such as Konoba Rustica, Konoba Miso , Pergola and Konoba Nonol.

Getting around

Umag is a small town which can be seen entirely on foot. If you prefer to be faster, though, you can rent a bike or a car. Alternatively, you can call a taxi. No matter what type of transportation you choose, make sure to stop and take in the beauty of the town and nature surrounding it.
